Hanging Plants: It Began In Babylon
Why don’t we go on a bit of a history tour to know about how these babies came to be.
The Hellenic Era of Greece was witness to the magnificent man-made creation which was the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. This is the most popular one of many recordings). Also, this period in time rose soon after the Dark Ages and saw many advances in arts and in the sciences. Additionally, this is a pivotal point in human history as it is considered the period wherein history, world history, actually was first penned and recorded.
Classical antiquity or the Classical Era sparked one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. So much evolving was happening in society, to be specific in education and philosophy, as well as in culture and the arts. Hence, it’s but fitting that this very wonder of Babylon was built in this timeline.
Moreover, being listed as such, it was among the other wonders such as The Pyramid of Giza, The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, The Colossus of Rhodes, The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, and The Lighthouse of Alexandria.
Babylon of old Mesopotamia, at one time, under the rule of Amorite king Hammurabi flourished. It was the largest city in the globe then, both in land mass as well as in population.
However, it was during King Nebuchadnezzar II’s reign when he had the garden of gardens made for his wife Queen Ametys of Media. The late king loved her so much. He wanted to show her in the most spectacular way he could think of. So girls, if you find a man willing to do this for you, you know what to do. Lol.
Furthermore, King Nebuchadnezzar II had the garden stand next to his palace The Marvel of Mankind. He designed the first in a way that would make his wife be reminded of her homeland.
Although there seems to be no remaining physical evidence of this amazing piece of history, no archeological evidence. It’s possible that its existence is mythological.
Still, it doesn’t change the fact that it has been used as inspiration for hanging plants as we know them now.
